If you are allergic to mineral makeup

Dermatologists often recommend the use of mineral makeup to patients with rosacea, acne, sensitive or oily skin because these products contain inorganic colorants which are less likely to cause irritation or allergic reactions than the colorants in other types of makeup.
Mineral products are well granulated powders and not liquids. This prevents them from being absorbed in the skin. They also provide sun protection. There are a lot of reasons why some ladies prefer the mineral makeup and one of them is that they are thought to be made of natural ingredients. But are they really? Any cosmetic company can claim that its products are mineral-based because the cosmetic industry is self-regulated. Third parties are not allowed to test and prove or refute a company’s claim. In this way a product can contain only traces of mineral ingredients and still be labeled as mineral.
What causes the allergies to mineral makeup?
Although there are companies and brands that sell truly mineral makeup, it is possible to develop allergies even to these products. When buying mineral cosmetics, always read the ingredients on the labels. If there is no such label, ask the consultant or call the producer company for more information. Preservatives, colorants, synthetic fibers and chemicals should not be found in this list. Zinc dioxide and titanium oxide are the ingredients that offer protection from the harmful UVA and UVB rays of the sun. Zinc is also a natural anti-inflammatory agent used in many products that fight inflammations and calm the skin. Allergies to these sun protection ingredients are rare.
Allergic reactions from mineral makeup are most often caused by a certain ingredient called Bysmuth Oxychloride. The cosmetic companies use it in their products in order to give them more shine. This however is a harmful ingredient. It clogs the pores and irritates the skin, and its regular use can cause severe allergies.
Another ingredient that can cause allergies is Carmine. Although it is FDA approved and considered harmless, when used in colored cosmetics, you better avoid it, especially if you have sensitive skin. Carmine is a dark red pigment made of the crushed shells of some insects. It is used predominantly in eye shadows and lipsticks and can cause severe reactions in some cases.
